Drama

Co-curricular drama is a great strength of the school, with a busy programme which every child can be part of.

There are usually three or four large-scale productions each year, in addition to evening showings of examination pieces, studio work, script and dance competitions. There are strong links with the music department with regular musicals staged. Productions in the last few years have included: Sweeney Todd, Far Away (in Reigate Caves), Much Ado About Nothing, The History Boys, Find Me, Guys & Dolls, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Brief Encounter, One Man Two Guvnors, Macbeth, Honk!, Dick Whittington and most recently Les Miserables and Love + Information (please click to see the photo galleries of these productions)

There are frequent visits to local and national theatres (over twenty-five each year) and regular visits by practitioners and touring theatre companies. We also hold regular online Masterclass events. The subject can also be studied at GCSE and A Level. There are drama and dance clubs for various year groups, regular Monoslam and Choreography Slam competitions and opportunities to be trained in all areas of technical theatre by our resident technical team. All of our productions are technically managed and operated by our students.

The department has regularly attended the National Student Drama Festival, the Brighton Fringe Festival with our touring puppet show and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Our last Edinburgh show, The Silence at The Song’s End received 5* reviews, including in The Times.

The Department is housed in two fully equipped black box studios, as well as a third space which includes a recording studio, a prop store and a costume workshop.  The studio spaces are used for examination performances and smaller-scale work whilst main school productions take place in the Concert Hall – a versatile performance area that can be adapted to accommodate large-scale musicals or smaller, more intimate productions.
