3rd Place National Cricket Cup – Girls

The under 15 cricket team has just completed an unforgettable cup run that took us to a national finals day where we finished 3rd. The tournament spanned across 10 fixtures and three months finally leaving RGS, Ipswich, Clifton College and Shrewsbury College to meet on finals day. Across the three months, we beat sides from Surrey (to retain the title of Surrey champions), Kent, Sussex and Middlesex to meet up with the winners of other areas of the country.

The National semi-final against Ipswich brought a disappointing loss however what a journey! We were fortunate to have four Surrey county age group players in our team and unique in having another five members of the squad who play club cricket together at Reigate Priory Cricket Club and multiple magnificent athletic competitors known for hockey, tennis and netball who stepped in to compete for the school.

Our county players may have dominated the statistics, in particular Emily B who was our leading wicket-taker and made over 400 runs across the ten fixtures. However, this was very much a team performance defined in many ways by a direct hit run out in the field from Antonia H (known for her netball skills) that arguably won our quarter-final against Forest School. In addition, Sophia V (known for her hockey) made a crucial 30 runs and took a pivotal wicket in the semi-final.

You will all be pleased to know that regardless of not quite becoming National champions, the girls definitely challenged the National ‘Bus Singing’ title for energy and volume albeit not quality!

It was a great experience to captain this team and was an experience that we will all remember forever. We are also proud that it has continued the rise of girls’ cricket at RGS who are now rightfully recognised as one of the leading girls’ cricket schools in the country. Congratulations and thanks go to Mr Leck and his team of helpers and we hope to assist him and RGS in continuing the development of girls’ cricket at the school in the future.
